Ghost in My Hand (2:45) I know the place where you're going to I know where you are I know the face that you're holding to I know who you are Losing yourself in a closet of secrets I can surely understand surely as holding the flame of a ghost in my hand I know the traces of what you've done I know what you do I know the distance between the lines that entangle truth Moving with grace in the maze of the restless I can surely understand surely as holding the flame of a ghost in my hand Miles away, beautiful and blighted comes the blue parade of the divided I remain holding a ghost in my hand Miles away, you will get excited by the single gaze of the united I remain uniquely uninvited I know the reason you count the length of the steps you take I know the window you place before any friend you make Deeply divided but cleanly connected I can surely understand surely as holding the flame of a ghost in my hand
2.
Broken Window (2:35) Smile when you're broken Talk when your love is gone Fly in the face of everyone behind your broken window Reach when you're sinking Hope when you're cut inside Laugh in the face of everyone behind your broken window Go outside then come back to yourself Come up from sleeping It's a new day Put away the weeping and you will see forty-seven second chances playing in the street forty-seven second chances you're supposed to meet Come up from sleeping It's a new day Put away the weeping and you will see forty-seven second chances standing in a line forty-seven second chances you're supposed to find Hey, when you're deeply lost in the underground lie in the faith of those who'll help you find your scattered pieces Leap when you're lonely Live when you're still inside Lie in the grace of those who'll help you mend your broken window Go outside to where you can go Look inside to find another and discover the love forever for you

Galiana 03:21
Galiana (3:18) Galiana standing in a world that is demanding She entreats the bitter crowd to know her name but while she is confessing, unaware, she is undressing for a soul who'd rather smile when she is slain Harder now If you look harder now wonderful things are ready and able to be defiant by emotion, crying to the open ocean bye bye to loneliness bye bye to emptiness Galiana walking while the government is talking of a better place for all to share as one but when she finds the address, she is startled by the madness of a place created better just for some Harder now If you look harder now wonderful things are ready and able to be and if you catch that feeling, and you hold to inspiration bye bye to loneliness bye bye to emptiness Blithely as the rain but as deeply as a veil she turns around and listens for a cup of conversation to relieve the inner ache of a name without a sound while the sewing and the sweeping are the only friends she's keeping Galiana hoping all the roads that are worth knowing are the ones that cross the world to come back home but far away the scratching of a world forever hatching and dispatching any trace of what she's known Harder now If you look harder now wonderful things are ready and able to be defiant by emotion, crying to the open ocean bye bye to loneliness bye bye to emptiness

about

Some years ago, Royans Records (the publishing arm of the Royans School of vocal training) put out a request to songwriters for work that could be recorded by students. So I put together three pop songs and sent them off on CD under the heading “Apple Logic.”

Compositionally, I wanted to bring together everything I’d learned about Beatlesque songwriting: the descending bass-note juxtaposition, the combining of 6th and 7th chords within seemingly incompatible phrases, the open high hats above a solid backbeat, and more. I chose “apple” to honor the Beatles’ famous label, Apple Records, and I chose “logic” to reflect the unique sensibility of Beatles song-craft. The cover of the CD was a plain black field to isolate and accentuate the apple-colored lettering and apple graphic (a further nod to the Beatles) and the CD label was a simple silver field with black lettering. I wanted the overall effect to look classic and striking in its simplicity—an effect that I’d continue with the CD’s accompanying lyric sheets (as I was still without vocal-recording capability at the time).

Royans didn’t express interest in the tracks so I pretty much chucked the recordings into a drawer and forgot about them until a few years ago, when my son asked to use a clip of one of the tracks for a “Dead Space” video-game walk-through he was making for YouTube (www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tMKRvOidK0).
