Burgelle Street (Lyrics) Dear old Anne writing love letters with her own hand She needs a man someone who’ll give meaning to her day Reading dirty letters is her way Leo Dan a discriminating garbage man He can’t stand what some throw out He’ll pick it up and put it back on your front door Give your garbage back to use once more On Burgelle Street, we all get to know you We’ll call you up late to say we’re doing well but we have nothing to say to you On Burgelle Street, we all get to know you We’ll call you up late to say we’re doing well but we have nothing to say to you Old Man Gree throwing bricks at people on the street and pulling out his teeth in front of you rolling up the daily news to give his boy a stiffer point of view On Burgelle Street, we all get to know you We’ll call you up late to say we’re doing well but we have nothing to say to you

I Don’t Drink Champagne (Lyrics) Wake up my love Put on your face and I will tell the neighbors they’re much too loud Why do they start so early? Too dark to see, so I’ll alternate the light bulb and scrape a twelve-day razor over my face I don’t drink champagne in the morning Sometimes I don’t drink anything at all We can’t be late, for though our jobs aren’t really great It’s all we’ve got right now to get us through And though you say that you’ve begun to crack I know that underneath it all there’s something stronger I don’t drink champagne in the morning Sometimes I don’t drink anything at all Sometimes I look to the end of my life And I wonder if things will ever pick up and we’ll get out of here And I don’t eat cake in the morning Sometimes I don’t eat anything at all One more page, as it slowly turns away we’ll wind our clocks, have a tea and think about the lottery and the note—the one sent by the landlord saying we’re too loud when we make love I don’t drink champagne in the morning Sometimes I don’t drink anything at all

about

Toward the end of the 1980s, the Stray Katz performed sporadically live, preferring instead to spend time experimenting and recording demos in the band’s four-track recording studio, Midnight Productions. In tandem with this, band members began exploring separate musical paths, either jointly or separately. Rick Wood would play and record with early members of Eye Eye (“Out on a Limb”) and play as lead guitarist for The Heebie Geebies. I’d record original songs with Groovy Religion guitarist Keith Elliott. Gord, Lance and Rick would run lights and sound for singer Robert E. Lee. I’d appear on stage for the first time as front man for a short-lived band that Gord had assembled. Rick and guitarist Mike Thomas would form the cover band Persons Unknown and bring me in as lead vocalist. Rick and I would then both get replaced in that band—Rick by guitarist Norm McMullen and me by singer Kevin Connelly (who’d go on with McMullen to form the band New Regime). At Midnight Productions, I’d be fortunate enough to be able to engineer a demo for a song called “Masquerade” by singer-songwriter Gregory Hoskins (a few years before Gregory Hoskins and the Stickpeople were signed to True North Records). And there was so much more, and while it all signalled the end of the Katz as they had been, it was a great adventure, snippets of which exist here. Enjoy.
