Another Day in Happyland (Lyrics) Waiting in the station Mary Allegation fiddles with her purse Standing at the wicket trying to buy a ticket man, she has a bigger need hanging on her back hanging on her back in Happyland hanging on the back of me Maybe Amadeus Julie Paranoia wanders on the road Trying to control the demon in her soda man, she has a bigger need hanging on her back hanging on her back in Happyland hanging on the back of me All my friends always laughing all my friends acting strange all my friends hanging angels on their doors but they can't fly anymore I kept the many pictures I put them all away I'm waiting for a letter but it hasn't come today I'm counting down the seconds I'm putting on a smile I was really hoping that you'd come over just for a while Yah, it's really been a while All my friends always laughing all my friends acting strange all my friends hanging demons on their doors but they can't pay anymore Walking on her wallet Lady Alcoholic stumbles through the door Trying to ignore the man upon the sofa man, she has a bigger need It's another day It's another day in Happyland hanging on the back of me

Nobody Listened (Lyrics) Nobody ever listened to my heart I felt like a piece was missing a priory without a bell desire looking for a well Nobody stopped to listen and things were getting pretty hard You said you would stop to listen for a while I thought that you may be joking ‘cause I’d had an offer once before and I wound up crawling on the floor You said you would stop to listen so I let myself beyond the line ‘cause nobody else ever listened to the wind and heard the quiet voice speaking through my heart I thought you would run away and never want to see me Here is a man who is broken Here is a man doing time Here is a man who is willing to stand before the world and say I’m really not that strong although the cost of what I’ve won and lost will leave me when I'm gone Here is the face I was wearing surrendered here in your hand I am so tired of pretending to be a strong, together man when really I’ve no strength remaining Here you are, and here you stay shining in a darkness waning Nobody ever listened to my heart I felt like a piece was missing a priory without a bell desire looking for a well Nobody stopped to listen but now I have a second start ‘cause nobody else ever listened to the wind that keeps the two of us speaking with our hearts every night and every day every night and every day

Child of Illusion (Lyrics) Breath of a wind in the courthouse glance of a green thing at sea he was a child of the great illusion gifted to those who could see oh if they could see Down to the street he would wander easy of mercy and time while he sang of a world forgotten though it was there to receive oh if they could see He had a song and he really didn’t mind if nobody came to the show he was fine with being the truth of his soul while finding the way to his home And so he sang to the wind in the courtyard sang to the birds and the trees So they chained him and called him crazy while offering coins at his feet for they couldn’t see He had a song and he really didn’t mind if nobody came to the show he was fine with being the truth of his soul while finding the way to his home So the people tried to see a trick behind his eyes and while they railed and wailed about it he stood and cradled their lives They couldn’t believe him so they beat him and left him there bleeding Then the people realized a chance of meaning had come but while they bent and broke and cursed themselves the chance of meaning was done And to the wind went the child of illusion blind to the hate and the fear while he sang of a world remembered simple and open and near oh it was so clear He had a song and he really didn’t mind if nobody came to the show he was fine with being the truth of his soul while finding the way to his home

It's So Easy (Lyrics) She doesn't need the simple things in life like holding me and loving It's so easy for her to forget me She doesn't need to complicate her life with tenderness and giving It's so easy for her to forget me and now I understand that one, you lied to me two, you led me on three, you're letting me go She doesn't need a carefully crocheted heart to slowly come unravelled It's so easy for her not to hold me She doesn't need a neatly folded lover hanging out the window It's so easy to say that I’m lonely and now I understand that one, you lied to me two, you led me on three, you're letting me go I guess what they say is true You will only have a place that is built just for you Nine o'clock, she sits alone by the phone and reads the news darns a skirt and climbs the stairs She turns out the bedroom light lets down her hair for one not there Oh no, oh no no This can't be happening to me You know I've done all I can to forget her So, I'll forget her just like she planned She doesn't need a quicker man to tell her that she's getting slower It's so easy for her to forget me She doesn't need a younger man to tell her that she's getting older It's so easy for her to forget me and now I understand that one, you lied to me two, you led me on three, you're letting me go

Bad Girl 03:52
Bad Girl (Lyrics) You are the wrong girl, dark and wild Although I know that you are bad for me I can’t shake the strange attraction of a tragic romance and I know you’ll have anyone When makin’ love, you’re just having fun I know that I should go but I can’t say no when you’re givin’ your lovin’ away I can forget you for a while I can pretend that you don’t make me go crazy but I cannot keep my feet from walking to your door and I know you will have anyone When makin’ love, you’re just having fun I know that I should run but it’s too much fun when you’re givin’ your lovin’ away I know that we will never be looking to lock ourselves in place for good I should really try to believe my lie but oh, oh, oh, I’m in love with a bad girl I’m in love with a bad girl I’m in love with a bad girl I’m in love with a girl and that’s why I act this way She was the one who held me twice rattled my head, and it sure felt so nice I know that you will never keep anything like a promise to love just one I should really go but I also know that oh, oh, oh, I’m in love with a bad girl I’m in love with a bad girl I’m in love with a bad girl I’m in love with a girl and that’s why I act this way She was the one who held me twice rattled my head, and it sure felt so nice Oh, I have never I have never been a bad boy but I know that I’m in love with you So I know the pain that I will go through Come on, come on I will hear you calling Then I run to you even though I’m falling I know I should go but I can’t say no when you’re givin’ your lovin’ away I know one day, maybe next week you will be off pursuing a fresh attraction but until then I will just pretend ‘cause oh, oh, oh, I’m in love with a bad girl I’m in love with a bad girl I’m in love with a bad girl I’m in love with a girl and that’s why I act this way She was the one who held me twice rattled my head, and it sure felt so nice

It's Only Love (Lyrics) Long the lonely clock ticks through the day Long the lonely arms outstretch for love not far away Chance beliefs that shaped the lives of two Old regrets, unspoken words when love was sweet and blue And the pain will come, but I don’t want to leave Yesterday has come and gone, I know It’s only love, it’s only madness You don’t have to run, you don’t have to leave I’m only foolish, drifting apart from the one I deceive I’m tired and helpless, wanting the hand that embraces my heart I’m simply stranded, waving hello from a world set apart Deep the wound of want presents its ache Deep the room of secrets keeps the truth upon a stake Thickly thirst the teeth of mortal fear Quickly come the curses when the truth becomes a tear And the pain will come, but I don’t want to leave Yesterday has come and gone, I know It’s only love, it’s only madness You don’t have to run, you don’t have to leave I’m only foolish, drifting apart from the one I deceive I’m tired and helpless, wanting the hand that embraces my heart I’m simply stranded, waving hello from a world set apart And when the loneliness inside me is a night without a day I console the child inside me and convince myself to say It’s only love, second to a rerun or a game It’s only love, vessel of silence for the slain It’s only love, property of children, the aged and insane It’s only love, it’s only love, it’s only love Long the lonely clock ticks through the day Long the lonely arms outstretch for love not far away Chance beliefs that shaped the lives of two Old regrets, unspoken words when love was sweet and blue And the pain will come, but I don’t want to leave Yesterday has come and gone, I know It’s only love, it’s only madness You don’t have to run, you don’t have to leave I’m only foolish, drifting apart from the one I deceive I’m tired and helpless, wanting the hand that embraces my heart I’m simply stranded, waving hello from a world set apart It’s only love, second to a rerun or a game It’s only love, vessel of silence for the slain It’s only love, property of children, the aged and insane It’s only love, it’s only love, it’s only love

Do You Remember Love? (Lyrics) Sensual and shy, do you remember remember love tossing and turning and dreaming of above Frightening and frail, do you remember your first embrace ready and hesitant the arms that interlaced You can’t move mountains in a stone romance You can’t make love unless you take a chance Come on, you can remember Your heart will find a way Trembling and wild, do you remember your first slow dance moving and measuring the meaning of a glance Laughing in the wind, do you remember that long first drive colors and kisses, feeling good to be alive You can’t move mountains in a stone romance You can’t make love unless you take a chance Come on, you can remember Your heart will find a way Sensual and shy, do you remember remember love tossing and turning and dreaming of above Frightening and frail, do you remember your first embrace ready and hesitant the arms that interlaced You can’t move mountains in a stone romance You can’t make love unless you take a chance Come on, you can remember Your heart will find a way

Fill Me Up 03:23
Fill Me Up (Lyrics) Billy Desrochers burned the Galleria Mall then fled to the Runnymede Arms Later in the day, he wound up getting blown away at Bay and Gerrard You could see the opposition lurking in the mission He was homeless awhile on the Halloween mile where the people went to pray Please fill me up Come and sit a spell Come fill me up All is truly well Farther in the west, Julianna takes a rest from working the street She is hungry and cold and empty of the youth she sold for something to eat There's a penny for the pity from the tourists in the city and none of her friends played a note at the end but they often stopped to pray Please fill me up Never mind the smell Come fill me up All is truly well Please fill me up Come and see the show Come fill me up You will never know And for a modest fee they will fetter the hand in need of a hope And for another fee they will wallpaper people in the color of your choice silence any protest and quiet any voice Johnny doesn't sleep He can barely make ends meet on Kennedy Road He used to be a tall-walkin', proud-lookin' cut of a man on Indian Grove He counts his nickels with eviction at the door while he adds up his age harried in a cage where the people used to pray Please fill me up Hope you have the cash Come fill me up Hope you like the lash Please fill me up Come and stay a spell Come fill me up All is truly well

The Dreamer and the Fool (Lyrics) You take me for an answer You take me for a king Though I loved you dearly it didn't mean a thing 'cause you crossed on the hillside and I crossed in the stream 'cause you are but a dreamer and I am but a fool Yes, you are but a dreamer and I am but a fool Now, many foreign dancers and many foreign kings love little blue ladies in cheap golden rings 'cause you've looked for the answers and I've lost many things 'cause you are but a dreamer and I am but a fool Yes, you are but a dreamer and I am but a fool Now, today I find you have gone and left me flowers Though I see with wounded sight I attend the empty bower As I run into the light I ascend the crystal tower and press to my breast the hope of a rest from loneliness and flight I sleep long in the morning You sleep deeply at dawn In the darkness, when you're breathing to your spirit, I am drawn We question all the answers to the chances that are gone 'cause you are but a dreamer and I am but a fool Yes, you are but a dreamer and I am but a fool

Anyone Can Plant a Seed (Lyrics) Anyone can plant a seed and leave it to grow wild The injured son himself becomes a beggar Anyone can say hello, I love you, but the few are those who say our love will grown and I will know you better Even fewer choose to stay believing in a truth, believing in a lie promising a home and to never roam making love while making promises of a life that you’ll never hold to Bleeding the arms that sanctify In the darkness, begging release The ropes that burn are coiled in peace while the heartache simmers under a summer smile Heading out for dinner, you turn around and sweetly say goodbye Anyone can plant a seed and leave it to become the angry son, the keeper of the vengeance Anyone can write a note of sorrow, but the few are those who call with warm rewards of peace and absolution Few are those who cleanse the pall Believing in a truth, believing in a lie you will break a home and forever roam making love while making promises of a life that you’ll never hold to Bleeding the arms that sanctify

Burgelle Street (Lyrics) Dear old Anne writing love letters with her own hand She needs a man someone who’ll give meaning to her day Reading dirty letters is her way Leo Dan a discriminating garbage man He can’t stand what some throw out He’ll pick it up and put it back on your front door Give your garbage back to use once more On Burgelle Street, we all get to know you We’ll call you up late to say we’re doing well but we have nothing to say to you On Burgelle Street, we all get to know you We’ll call you up late to say we’re doing well but we have nothing to say to you Old Man Gree throwing bricks at people on the street and pulling out his teeth in front of you rolling up the daily news to give his boy a stiffer point of view On Burgelle Street, we all get to know you We’ll call you up late to say we’re doing well but we have nothing to say to you
14.
The Horseman II (Lyrics) Far away, unspoken far away in time well behind the memories of a world I will not find lives the dream to see you I dream it every day but love and dreams can be painful things so I put them all away and I sift the landslide for a piece of what I was before the war Then I take the long ride Where I’m going, I couldn’t say I can still remember water, birth and sand I can feel I’m safe and real by remembrance of your hand But those days are over They were buried deep though they often visit me So I struggle not to sleep where I sift the landslide for a piece of what I was before the war Then I take the long ride never resting ‘til I can find what it was for You will find a better place You will find the space to reach within your heart and find the love left lying in waste You will find a better home You will never have the burden of the lonely You will reap the love you have sown

about

Some years ago, I wrote this collection of 15 song demos and grouped them under the name “Strange Presence.” The only equipment available to me at the time was an outdated version of MicroLogic and a Roland JV-1010 tone generator. As such, I was unable to record vocals for the tracks that had vocals, but I didn’t see this as detrimental to my idea of essentially putting together an album demo and presenting it to music publishers and record companies. Unfortunately, most conversations basically went as follows:

Some Guy: “But these are not finished songs, and they’re not pop songs.”

Naïve Me: “That’s right. Call it the first draft of a novel, if you will. I use this analogy because, while I do have a history as a performer, I’m much more of a writer these days. As such, I’ve put together this demo collection with all the arrangements in place, and I’ve scored each song with an easily discernible melody line to show how the lyrics will go. I also have all the lyric sheets here. If there’s anything that you think has potential, and you feel confident enough to explore a potential partnership a bit further, we could re-record tracks in a proper studio with live instruments. We could bring in vocalists or I could do vocals myself. I believe there are many ways to approach these songs.”

Some Guy: “But you’re not a band. How would you promote this stuff?”

Naïve Me: “Well yes, I’m not a band. I suppose if live performance was an issue, musicians could be hired just as many bands hire performers. But I believe there are many venues to explore, such as soundtrack placement or the selling of songs to other musicians.”

Some Guy: “But these are not finished songs, and they’re not pop songs.”

In the end, I couldn’t figure out whether the idea of cooperative, second-generation demo production had become a wildly outmoded concept or whether the progressive-rock elements I’d incorporated into some of my tracks had resulted in some kind of disconcerting presentation. I suppose I’ll let history decide. Anyway, here they are—15 tracks of music (some free) from the back rooms of Xrisville. Enjoy.

Pricing Note: While download costs have been fixed to this collection, I’d be happy to email free copies to anyone interested in using any music for a video (or any other production), re-recording or other purposes. Email xrisville@yahoo.ca.
