“Angel in the Soup Line” resulted from the time at Midnight Productions when the Stray Katz were exploring individual musical paths, with Rick playing and performing punk and New Wave, me exploring pop and classical elements, Gord delving into that atmospheric lounge sound captured by bands like Roxy Music and the Motels, and Lance more richly mining the narrative, street level-style of writing embodied by artists like Tom Waits.
As a portrait of the human condition, “Angel in the Soup Line” is distinctly sympathetic in its scope and honors simple resiliency. Lance laid down the guitar parts and vocals, and used a Roland TR-808 for the accompanying rhythm. Gord engineered, and there’s a unique, ethereal quality to the overall production, with Lance's softly delivered vocals contrasting the muted, hammer-strike pulses of the 808. I’ve always found this song to be one of those compositions that tends to linger after the final notes have played, and remains one of Lance's more moving works.
