“I Don’t Drink Champagne” was written as a real-life snapshot. I was in a new relationship and living on my own for the first time in a cheap but roach-infested apartment in Bramalea, Ont. I was writing about how poor we were and how desperate things felt, and I wanted to convince myself that things were going to get better. Similar to how I recorded the first demo of “Burgelle Street,” I recorded this song using an acoustic piano for bass lines and chord progressions, and played both in real time. I used the Korg Lambda synth from Midnight Productions to play the accompanying melody lines and guitarist Keith Elliott played guitar. I can’t recall what type of drum machine I used but it was likely Midnight Productions’ in-house Korg 100. I did record a vocal line but that recording remains in the wind. So for now, the instrumental dub of the song is all that presently remains.

I Don’t Drink Champagne (Lyrics)
Wake up my love
Put on your face and I will tell the neighbors they’re much too loud
Why do they start so early?
Too dark to see, so I’ll alternate the light bulb
and scrape a twelve-day razor over my face
I don’t drink champagne in the morning
Sometimes I don’t drink anything at all
We can’t be late, for though our jobs aren’t really great
It’s all we’ve got right now to get us through
And though you say that you’ve begun to crack
I know that underneath it all there’s something stronger
I don’t drink champagne in the morning
Sometimes I don’t drink anything at all
Sometimes I look to the end of my life
And I wonder if things will ever pick up and we’ll get out of here
And I don’t eat cake in the morning
Sometimes I don’t eat anything at all
One more page, as it slowly turns away
we’ll wind our clocks, have a tea and think about the lottery
and the note—the one sent by the landlord
saying we’re too loud when we make love
I don’t drink champagne in the morning
Sometimes I don’t drink anything at all
