This one began as a pure technical challenge. I wanted to craft a pop song with quick chord changes to provide a rich auditory texture, then compliment the chord progressions with a walking bass line. Melody, rhythm and accompanying chords were kept as simple as possible so as not to denude the core objective—a big pop sound that could easily be reproduced by any four-piece rock band.
Thematically, the song is about failed relationships and the resulting fear of opening one’s heart to another. The song also addresses male vulnerability and the reluctance of men to expose any fragility for fear of being branded weak. The premise is not a progressive one. I wanted a classic theme for a song crafted to be radio-friendly and saleable. To this end, I gave the lyrics a happy ending, which is a bit cliché, but I wanted to show that bravery in emotional matters does have its rewards.
Nobody ever listened to my heart
I felt like a piece was missing
a priory without a bell
desire looking for a well
Nobody stopped to listen
and things were getting pretty hard
You said you would stop to listen for a while
I thought that you may be joking
‘cause I’d had an offer once before
and I wound up crawling on the floor
You said you would stop to listen
so I let myself beyond the line
‘cause nobody else ever listened to the wind
and heard the quiet voice
speaking through my heart
I thought you would run away
and never want to see me
Here is a man who is broken
Here is a man doing time
Here is a man who is willing
to stand before the world and say
I’m really not that strong
although the cost of what I’ve won and lost
will leave me when I'm gone
Here is the face I was wearing
surrendered here in your hand
I am so tired of pretending
to be a strong, together man
when really I’ve no strength remaining
Here you are, and here you stay
shining in a darkness waning
Nobody ever listened to my heart
I felt like a piece was missing
a priory without a bell
desire looking for a well
Nobody stopped to listen
but now I have a second start
‘cause nobody else ever listened to the wind
that keeps the two of us
speaking with our hearts
every night and every day
every night and every day
