The Stray Katz never had a more amazing studio opportunity than to record the original song “Nouveau Riche” at the immortal Nimbus 9 recording studio in Toronto’s Yorkville district. (Nimbus 9 is perhaps best remembered for its part in the recording of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”). The music came from an impromptu jam, with bassist Gord Bell walking a bass line that Xris tried to complement with what sounded like a simple, reggae-style beat. The lyrics are an intentional mangle of English and French mispronunciations. The B3 organ and all percussion were impromptu additions in the studio. All tracks are live, of course, and the song was recorded in one session starting at around 11 p.m. and finishing sometime around 3 a.m.
