about

In the mid-1980s, Rick and guitarist Mike Thomas formed a cover band called Persons Unknown (a take on the ‘80s band Missing Persons) and Rick recommended me for the front-man position as vocalist. I was doubtful of being able to perform varied covers when I had a limited vocal range but it was also a welcome opportunity, as I’d previously experienced performing without playing drums in Gord Bell’s sideline band and had enjoyed it. So I saddled up and we rehearsed for a few months in the Burlington, Ont., basement of ex-Cartune bassist Brian Klodt (along with drummer Paul Wazylenki). Demos were recorded to play to club owners and gigs soon followed.

It was fun for a time. I hadn’t performed for a while (as the Stray Katz had largely left performance for working in the studio) and it was great to get back out there before crowds. Yet guitarist Mike Thomas had long wanted to play in a band with lead guitarist Norm McMullen, a seasoned player who’d been gigging for years in all sorts of bands. When Norm became available, Mike invited him to join and Rick was edged out. Gigs continued but the experience had left a sour taste in my mouth. So when I walked into the recording studio one day to find Persons doing demos with singer Kevin Connelly (who’d later depart Persons to form New Regime with Norm), I wasn’t surprised that I’d been kicked out of the band. I just wish someone had told me before I’d walked into the studio. Well, that’s rock ‘n’ roll, I guess.

About this track:

Of the three demos I recorded with Persons Unknown, “Rock This Town” (written by Brain Setzer) showed me that, while I loved rockabilly music, I was definitely not a rockabilly vocalist. In the recording, I actually forget some of the words and just fudge it.
