“Stay in Bed” was the last demo the Stray Katz ever recorded together as a quartet and wasn’t produced as a demo to get gigs but as a demo for its own sake. As ownership of Midnight Productions was changing to Lance and Gord (who were in the midst of packing things up to move to a location in Toronto), I scrounged together a few hundred dollars and booked time in an Etobicoke, Ont., recording studio. I’d been working on a pop riff with something of a swing beat and wanted to lay it down to see how it all sounded. The recording of the music tracks went longer than expected. Adding to that, I’d been so concerned about working out the music that I hadn’t written any lyrics, which wouldn’t have been a concern if we’d been recording at Midnight Productions. But with the clock ticking and dollars going out the window, time wasn’t a luxury I could afford. So on the way to what would be a very rushed vocal session, I scribbled down some lyrics that, in the end, would just be kind of embarrassing. I still have the vocal recording but prefer to offer here the music track—a tightly played pop composition combining elements of swing.
