about

Like “Waves,” I began writing bits and pieces of “The Horseman” when I was in my teens. (I didn’t have a name for the song then.) In the late 1980s, I used some of the progressions in a rough recording of "Ode to Joy" in which I tried to combine pop and classical elements. After purchasing my first MIDI system, I began composing a full version of the song but I only had basic Trax software and the on-board sound module of a used and decaying MIDI-compatible synth. So I couldn’t run all the parts I’d composed. Leads would cack out. MIDI delay would become a problem. It was all a bit frustrating. In 2003, I managed to assemble enough gear to do the job and “The Horseman” finally rode so many years after I’d first imagined it. While “The Horseman” is an instrumental (and part of what would become a trilogy), the music nonetheless echoes a story—the simple tale of a rider who is at odds to find the woman he loves.
