I actually began composing “Waves” when I was about 14 years old. I could hear how I wanted the song to sound but I just didn’t have the fingering. I tried to forget the song but the notes kept swirling around in my head. When I finally managed to purchase my first home MIDI studio, I returned to “Waves” with some fresh compositional ideas and finally got it down the way I’d originally imagined it. The lyrics are about love—its slow rhythms, its lasting nature and the depths it can offer—and more or less stand the way I wrote them when I was 14.
lyrics
Waves
The waves tumble over at night
and disappear quite near the end
A calm cannot keep up a motion
There has to be motion again
And I know that they’ll always be
I can see them come cascading down
Now they’re dancing around my feet
Centuries shape a shoreline
I hope they don’t get too ahead
Now you may say it’s no wonder
the waves took me out instead
to the sea, I can see a new horizon before me
They can call, I will understand
You can touch them in a dream if you can
You have taken my body
You have cleansed my soul
Now you lay down before me
as I walk along the shore
And that is why I still love you
You lead me out once more
Touch and take my feelings
I can’t take much any more
In the sea, I can see a new horizon unfolding
In your words, I will understand
I will touch you in a dream if I can
